Extraordinary Form Latin Mass during the summer.
During the summer, the Extraordinary Form traditional Latin Mass will continue to be celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month at 12:30 pm in the main church.
However, it switches from the “High Mass” or Missa Cantata to “Low Mass with hymns” for July and August and early September. This means that the Mass Propers and Commons will not be sung, bur recited by the priest. Latin and English hymns can be sung during the Mass as appropriate. The Missa Cantata is always sung by both priest, schola, and people in Latin.
For this summer, a provision of Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict XVI’s great Apostolic Constitution making the traditional Liturgy available again, will be utilized. At the indicated places, the “didactic” parts of the Mass (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory and Communion verses ) and the Scripture readings will be heard in English. All other parts of the Mass will remain in Latin ( except for the Greek of the Kyrie of course). All these parts of the Mass will be from the 1962 Missal, not the “Novus Ordo”.
A Missa Cantata will be sung with the usual ceremony and Chant on Sunday August 15th, to mark Our Lady’s Assumption and the return on the Sunday Mass obligation fittingly.
The regular Missa Cantata will resume on the third Sunday of September.
