The corporate officers are needed to enact legal documents required for the administration of the parish. Examples of these tasks include: corporate resolutions, real estate transactions, budgetary documents, stock sales, and annual financial reports.
The Finance Committee is actually the only committee required in a Catholic parish according to canon law. The church desires that each parish's pastor is assisted by good advisors in the financial administration of the parish.
The purpose of the Finance Committee is to advise the Pastor of the parish in all things financial. They meet quarterly, review the quarterly financial reports and the budget, They are "other sets of eyes" over the parish finances.
The Finance Committee is comprised of the two Lay Trustees of the Parish as well as appointed members. The Pastor is an ex-officio member. The parish business manager (or bookkeeper, if none) and the consulting CPA also attend.
In a Catholic parish in our Diocese, the Lay Trustees are two members of the five member Board of Directors for the parish corporation (Bishop, Episcopal Vicar, Pastor, Lay Trustees).
