The Holy Eucharist is source and summit of life with Jesus in the Church. Saint Augustine said, “If we receive the Eucharist worthily, we become what we receive” (Easter Sermon 227). We commune with Christ by consuming Christ. By receiving Christ, we become one with Christ, both as individuals and communities. As we partake of the body of Christ, we are made into the body of Christ
Therefore, in its most basic terms, Catholics receive the really-present Christ in Communion so that they may be Christ in the world.
Catholics believe that when one consumes the Eucharist, one is incorporated into Christ and becomes bonded to others who are also part of the body of Christ on Earth. It is not simply a matter of individual belief, but of Church unity and the mission of being Christ in the world.
Children are prepared to receive First Communion through our C.C.D. program. Please contact our Director of Religious Education, Mary Donaldson, (631) 864-3321 for more information.
Adults are prepared to receive First Communion as part of the R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation) program. Please contact the Parish Center for more information on full initiation into the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist.
Typically, children receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in May of second grade. We make Confirmation in the Spring of 8th grade. Sacrament years are now two-year programs - First Communion 1st & 2nd grade, Confirmation 7th & 8th grade.
At St. Matthew, together with the parents and with the grace of God, the Religious Education Department along with all the catechists, work hard to help the children become all God created them to be.
